ATTENTION ALL HOKE COUNTY ELECTION CANDIDATES

ATTENTION ALL HOKE COUNTY ELECTION CANDIDATES

As the campaign season begins it is important to be aware of the regulations for the placement of campaign signs in un-incorporated Hoke County.

There are several North Carolina state-wide General Statutes that apply to campaign signs as well as a section of the local Hoke County Zoning Ordinance. Please review the following laws for campaign sign:

NC General Statute 14-156 prohibits campaign signs from being placed on powerlines or power poles.

NC General Statute 136-32 says political / campaign signs may NOT be placed inside the NCDOT right of way of any state road until thirty (30) days before the beginning of early voting. Signs may only be in the right-of-way during the period before and after an election if they are the following:

  • No closer than three feet from the edge of the pavement of the road.
  • No sign shall obscure motorist visibility at an intersection.
  • No sign shall be higher than 42 inches above the edge of the pavement of the road.
  • No sign shall be larger than 864 square inches.
  • No sign shall obscure or replace another sign.

Chapter 7 Sign Regulations, Section 7.5 F of the Hoke County Zoning Ordinance states campaign and election signs may not be larger than eight (8) square feet in size and may not be put up more than 60 days before the beginning of early voting.

Campaign signs put up more than 60 days before the start of early voting will be removed by county staff. Removed signs will be available for pick up from the Hoke County Planning Department Monday through Friday during normal business hours located at 423 E. Central Avenue, Raeford, NC.

For questions or to report an illegally placed sign contact the Hoke County Planning Department at (910) 875-8407.
