 TAX ADMINISTRATION

The Tax Administration office is also located in the Pratt Building at 227 North Main Street in Raeford, NC.  This office is responsible for listing, appraising, and assessing all property subject to ad valorem taxation. There are approximately 24,000 parcels of land, 700 businesses, and 40,000 motor vehicles in Hoke County.

Hoke County has a permanent listing system for real property. Personal property (ex: mobile home, boats, airplanes, non-licensed vehicles, multi-year tagged trailers, and business equipment) must be listed in January each year.  Failure to list during the month of January will result in a 10% late listing penalty.  Businesses may request an extension of time for listing. The request must be in writing and show a good cause. Requests must be received by January 31.

Applications for tax exemptions and exclusions may be obtained during January each year. Churches, Educational foundations, non-profit agencies, etc are not automatically tax exempt.  Effective January 1, 2009, the income limit for the elderly and disabled exclusion is $25,600 per year. The applicant must be 65 years old or totally and permanently disabled.  Applications are due by June 1, 2009.

There are two new programs for tax exclusion for the 2009 tax year.  The Circuit Breaker exclusion maximum income is $38,400.  Taxes are not exempt but deferred in this program.  Also, there is the new disabled veteran exclusion for 100% service-connected disabilities.  The First $45,000 in appraised value of the permanent residence is excluded from taxation.  These applications are due by June 1, 2009.

Customer Service: Our staff provides taxpayers with general tax information, copies of property record cards, tax maps, and county maps. We maintain 2 public access computers. They are available for use by the general public as well as professionals (ex: attorneys, paralegals, surveyors, appraisers, etc.).  We also maintain the GIS/Tax website available for public viewing.
